Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1950. Sources
differ as to the exact birthplace on June 18th, 1908 of Joe
Beaton, between Lourdes Newfoundland and Stellarton Nova Scotia, both in
Canada. Prior
to coming to London in the autumn of 1934 to join the newly formed
Richmond Hawks of the English National League, Beaton had been a 1932/33
All-Star A-team selection in the Maritime Senior League while playing
with the Charlottetown Islanders. He was to captain the Hawks to second
place in the 1936 title race, while finishing as the leagues top scorer
and earning an All-Star B-team selection. Having moved to the Harringay
Greyhounds from the start of the 37/38 season, he was to end up the
leagues top scorer again in his third season, and earned two selections
to the All-Star A-teams, in 37/38 & 39/40. After
the Second World War Beaton, a quiet, unassuming teetotaller played one
season with the Wembley Lions before retiring, through injury in the
spring of 1947 and going on to enjoy a successful business career. At
the time of retiring, Joe Beaton was the all-time leading scorer in the
English National League with 179 goals and 129 assists for 308 points. Joe
Beaton died in Stanmore, England in 1965. Compiled with research, provided by Martin C.Harris – April 1998. |
